Maja Bugge was born and brought up in Northern Norway, and even though she is now Lancaster-based, she still finds inspiration in the simultaneously beautiful and brutal landscapes of her homeland. Her music consists of meditative, soft tones in a mix with dramatic turns and everyday sounds.
Bugge has more than 20 years of experience, working both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other artist and organizations. She has worked with Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Art (LICA), Oslo Moderne Teater, the National Theatre Oslo, Beaivvas Theater, and many more.
“Maja Bugges music has the power to transform the space around her yet reflect and absorb it, and in doing so she creates an almost meditative-like state in the listener”, says Steve Mead, Artistic Director of Manchester Jazz Festival. In her solo concept she blends her original compositions with improvisation, and explores stillness, repetition, harmony and dissonance.
