Book Club: Thomas Enger – Cursed

We are proud to launch our new monthly book club with a chance for you to win a copy of Cursed by Thomas Enger.

We kick off our new book club with Cursed by Thomas Enger. Considered ‘one of the most unusual and intense writers in the field’ by the Independent, former journalist Enger made his debut with crime novel Burned in 2010. The novel is the first in a series of five books about journalist Henning Juul and became an international sensation before publication. Cursed is the second novel in the series and the most recent in English.

When Hedda Hellberg fails to return from a retreat in Italy, her husband discovers that his wife’s life is tangled in mystery. She appears to be connected to the death of an old man, gunned down on the first day of the hunting season. Henning Juul becomes involved in the case when his ex-wife joins in the search for the missing woman, and the estranged pair find themselves enmeshed both in the murky secrets of one of Norway’s wealthiest families, and in the painful truths surrounding the death of their own son.

The series delves into the depths of Oslo’s underbelly, skewering the corridors of dirty politics and nailing the fast-moving world of 24-hour news. Chilling, gritty and unputdownable, Cursed marks the return of one of Norway’s finest crime writers.

‘Suspenseful, dark and gritty, this is a must-read’ – Booklist

‘Thomas Enger is one of the finest writers in the Nordic Noir genre, and this is his very best book yet. Outstanding’ – Ragnar Jónasson

‘The careful revealing of clues, the clever twists, and the development of Henning Juul and the supporting characters make this a very promising start to a new series’ – Suspense Magazine

The Nordic Noir genre has been hugely successful with authors such as Jo Nesbø, Stieg Larsson and Karin Fossum, influencing international literature. Over the course of this spring, many central authors in the genre will appear at several crime literature festivals in the UK.

Enger will attend the popular crime convention CrimeFest in Bristol, May 18-21, together with Gunnar Staalesen and Kjell Ola Dahl, who are among the fathers of the Nordic Noir genre, Jørn Lier Horst, Torkil Damhaug and Hans Olav Lahlum. The crime writing festival Newcastle Noir, April 29-30, will see appearances by Enger and Dahl.
