A version of Harald Sohlberg’s defining image of Norway, Winter Night in The Mountains, will be sold at Sotheby’s in London this month. Executed in watercolour and ink on paper, the work dates from 1911.

The work will be on public view at Sotheby’s from Saturday 10th July until the morning of Wednesday 14th, the first time a major work by Sohlberg has been shown in the UK since 2019. That year saw the retrospective ‘Harald Sohlberg: Painting Norway’ at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, when this painting was hung alongside the famous larger version in oil loaned by the Norwegian National Gallery in Oslo.

‘The longer I stood gazing at the scene the more I seemed to feel what a solitary pitiful atom I was in an endless universe…It was as if I had suddenly awakened in a new, unimagined and inexplicable world.’ Harald Sohlberg
